Three criteria for European companies
Brand means the name under which a product or service is offered. Retailer means the business selling it to you. Company is our shared term for the business behind either role; one company may be both the brand and the retailer.
Our diligence focuses on three points: (1) the ownership, incorporation and headquarters of the company behind the brand or service, (2) the location of production / development of the products / services being sold and (3) the ownership, incorporation and headquarters of the retailer you are buying from.
Brand
We assess to what extent the company providing the product or service is European. We look at (a) its country of incorporation, (b) where it has its headquarters and (c) who its owners are.
As part of our diligence, we look at company registry extracts, the legal information provided by companies on their websites as well as other publicly available sources.
Production
We look at where the company makes its products. This check is generally conducted on a company-wide basis, rather than on an individual product basis as where a company has multiple production sites, it is often impossible to assess where the individual product being sold is made.
We rely on company statements or other publicly available sources to make this assessment.
Retailer
We assess whether the business which is selling the product or service (if different to the company behind the brand or service) is European on the same basis that we assess the company providing the product or service, looking at (a) its country of incorporation, (b) where it has its headquarters and (c) who its owners are.
What we mean by Europe
Eurava has decided to use the Council of Europe membership for what we consider Europe. This is broader than the European Union or the EEA and currently covers 46 countries.

For each criterion that we diligence, we give an assessment on how European the Company is, as follows:
The assessed criterion is European on all counts within the stated scope. For example, a company is incorporated, headquartered and owned in Europe.
The assessed criterion includes both European and non-European elements. For example, a company’s production may be partially in Europe and partially outside of Europe.
We’ve either been unable to determine whether the assessed criterion is European or non-European or it’s not relevant to assess the relevant criterion for this particular company or product. For example, an assessment of location of production is not applicable for a provider of services.
The assessed criterion is not European. For example, a retailer is not owned, headquartered or incorporated in Europe.
Our diligence
As outlined above, our assessments rely on a mixture of company registry information, information provided by the company and other publicly available sources. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of this information or our assessments.
If you think any of our assessments are incorrect, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
